Gail Monaghan remembers confections from other eras in her new book Lost Desserts, which is out this month from Rizzoli New York. Drawing inspiration from the women in her family, vintage cookbooks, and recipes handed down from friends and colleagues, she passes along more than 70 updated dessert recipes and the stories that continue to keep them alive. Classics from bygone restaurants, such as orange chiffon cake and banana shortcake from former Los Angeles favorites the Brown Derby and Chasen’s, are fondly re-created. Illustrated with photos by Eric Boman, the book depicts sweet creations with names like Marbled Rose and Raspberry Fool.
