On Thursday, the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Gold Coast opening drew 500 guests, and featured a Blues Brothers tribute act and a 3,000-pound cake.
Event host Joe Perillo, principal and general manager of Gold Coat Exotic Imports, recently caught an episode of the the Learning Channel show Cake Boss. The episode starred Buddy Valastro, who had inherited a New Jersey bakery from his deceased father. Feeling an emotional connection with the baker, a fellow Italian-American, Perillo contacted him and asked him to whip something up for the opening. Valastro agreed, and the event was ultimately taped for an upcoming episode of the cake-centric show.
With a "Chicago's Best" theme, Valastro's enormous dessert had replicas of city landmarks, a mini deep-dish pizza, and the Rolls-Royce hood ornament: a winged figure known as the Spirit of Ecstasy. Forklift operators helped unload the cake from its delivery truck, and the setup process took 30 minutes.
