1. INAUGURATION PARTY GUIDE: The New York Times compiled a list of what it says are the hottest unofficial parties. "Everyone knows that the best inauguration parties aren’t the government balls but the private fetes that fill museums and restaurants, tie up car services, throw caterers and celebrity wranglers into high gear, and turn Washington into something like Fashion Week or the Oscars for the style challenged." http://nyti.ms/XG7OVd
2. BRANDING MISS AMERICA: Which is more important: Promoting brands that sponsor the pageant or supporting American labels? The question arose because of sponsor Joseph Ribkoff, a Canadian fashion label. PR Newser: "We don’t mean to go all nationalistic here, but isn’t it a little strange for a Canadian brand to sponsor the Miss America winner, much less the pageant itself? Surely there’s an American brand willing to step up and embrace a great PR opportunity like this one, right?" http://bit.ly/X3z2SW
3. OSCAR TWEET TRACK: Twitter launched its Oscars Index this week, a tool that charts positive comments about nominees and displays them on a graph. The service, produced with social-analytics provider Topsy, can show whether an Oscar campaign is working among the social media set. Hollywood Reporter: "This offers a way to sift through the clutter of the Oscar tweets and observe some interesting trends about which contenders are getting the most positive feedback." http://bit.ly/X2gkeo
4. FOOD POWER BROKERS: The Daily Meal's third annual “America's 50 Most Powerful People in Food” awarded the top spot to Bernardo Hernandez, director of product management and managing director at Zagat, and Jack Menzel, product managing director. Other notables include First Lady Michelle Obama and the the chief executives of Walmart, McDonald's, Pinterest, and Weight Watchers. http://bit.ly/eByXLk
5. VAPORIZED BOOZE: Is vaporizing and inhaling alcohol the new way to "drink" cocktails? The "Vaportini" offers this new experience. Web site: "One inhales through the straw and holds their breathe for a moment and then exhales. That’s it. The effects are felt immediately because the alcohol is going directly through the bloodstream. Most people experience a relaxed and mellow feeling." http://bit.ly/13vxLee
