2. CURLING, ANYONE?: Those of us who live outside of Canada or the upper Midwest likely only see the sport of curling every four years at the Olympics. But champagne maker Veuve Clicquot hosted a curling demonstration Monday at the Standard Hotel in New York, followed by free ice skating. Women's Wear Daily: "Though a bit of a strange sight in the meatpacking district, the demo made a certain sense. Curling is an intensely social sport, as several of the Norfolk club’s members pointed out to those who did take a shot at sliding the stones and sweeping the ice. When one participant’s broom fell to the ice, several club members extolled those around the rink to drink." http://wwd.us/14rzb92
3. MUST-HAVE COCKTAIL INGREDIENT: Want a trendy cocktail at your next event? Tanqueray is reviving a type of gin that has developed into a legend after being shelved in 2001. Malacca was softer, had a less distinct juniper flavor, and had a lower proof. New York Times: "Mixologists who tasted it said it was as close as you could get today to Old Tom Gin, a sweeter, 19th-century style of gin essential to recreating certain pre-Prohibition cocktails. The thirsty hunted for stray bottles." It returns next month. http://nyti.ms/UADbkD
4. AUSTEN APPRECIATION: A year-long slate of events will mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice, including a reconstruction of the Netherfield Ball by the BBC, a 12-hour read-a-thon streamed online from the Jane Austen Center in Bath, England, and in the U.S., a museum exhibition at Goucher College in Baltimore. New York Times: "So many people of all ages, nationalities, and walks of life now self-identify as Austen fans and are out and proud about that. They love, love, love P&P and are overjoyed at any opportunity to celebrate and share that love.” http://nyti.ms/WkRgCY
