1. EXOTIC MENU: Has your catering menu ever included tarantulas, cockroaches, and worm salad? The disgusting dishes were served at the Explorers Club annual ball last weekend in New York. Gothamist: "The man behind the unusual dishes served during this hour is Gene Rurka, the chairman of the exotics committee—and this year he served up a menu that included everything from Rattlesnake Sliders to Chipotle BBQ Beaver to Camel Meat Loaf, Sweet Chili Pickled Eyeballs, Hoisin Glazed Kangaroo, and Insect Canapes." http://bit.ly/147loXI
2. WORLD TRADE CENTER DECK: Legends Hospitality Management, the company that runs marketing, merchandising, and luxury boxes at stadiums for the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys, will operate the observatory planned for 1 World Trade Center. The tallest deck in the city (but short of Chicago's Willis Tower), the space is expected to draw 3.5 million visitors a year. New York Times: "Visitors will enter one of five dedicated elevators that rise to the 102nd floor, where there will be an 'experiential' theater presentation, which opens up to reveal the views, and an event space for private parties. There will be a restaurant and gift shop on the 101st floor and another observation deck on the 100th floor." http://nyti.ms/YRPpq5
3. LADY LIBERTY: In other landmark news, the iconic statue will reopen to the public on July 4 following repairs to its docks, security screening area, and other parts that were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. NBC New York: "The repairs will also bring back 400 people who work for the Statue of Liberty and about 1,000 who work in the tourist industry." http://bit.ly/16Ht5nc
4. DISNEYLAND ADMISSION POLICY: A new rule from the company bans children under 14 from the park unless they have an adult with them. Los Angeles Times: "The new policy, according to Disney officials, puts Disneyland's age policy in line with the company's other amusement parks. Industry experts say the new rule reflects a change in attitude about what age is safe for children to be left unaccompanied in a theme park." http://lat.ms/Y4rBTb
5. EXHIBITION ECONOMY: The exhibition industry overall saw less growth in the second half of 2012, according to the Center for Exhibition Industry Research. "We attribute this to the well-publicized prospect of the 'fiscal cliff,' which substantially hurt business sentiment and willingness to incur travel expenses, and ultimately hurt the exhibition industry," said Allen Shaw, an economist with the center. The top performing sectors were discretionary consumer services and sporting goods, travel, and entertainment. www.ceir.org
