Bikes Decorate Tour de France Doc Premiere

The screening of the IMAX film included bicycles and touches inspired by rural France in the summer.

April 6, 2006
The history of cycling and the French countryside were the inspiration for the premiere party for Wired to Win: Surviving the Tour de France, an IMAX documentary produced by Boston-based Partners HealthCare, at the Sony IMAX Theatre in Lincoln Square. The event followed a screening of the film, which chronicles the mental and physiological stresses of two cyclists as they compete in the Tour de France, and will be used as a teaching tool for Partners' educational programs. JoAnna Baldwin Mallory, Sandra Mori, and Eileen Donohue of Partners HealthCare and marketing consultant Mary Jane Dodge planned the 450-guest premiere party. (The film will be in limited release in IMAX theaters nationwide.)Liz Sanzo of Events by Liz and Shara Maso of Maso Enterprises created an eight-foot-tall sculpture using spray-painted recycled bicycle wheels, and more wheels topped the buffet tables. A vintage bike from East Village shop Classic Restorations and white picket directional signs decorated the entryway to the event. Uplit film stills of computer-generated images of the brain and body under physical duress lined the walls. Big bouquets of sunflowers—some wrapped with wire (get it?)—on the bars and buffet tables contrasted the serious scientific imagery with a sunny, cheerful mood.

David Turk of Indiana Market and Catering served a French menu, which included bite-sized croque monsieurs, French onion soup tartlets, arugula and bacon quiche, and truffled potato croquettes. Three buffets served shrimp bouillabaisse, crepes, and salmon nicoise salad. Caterwaiters wore bicycling caps and yellow jerseys akin to those worn by Tour de France time leaders.
