The food truck trend has made its way to Miami. Mobile restaurants are serving food ranging from gourmet burgers and hot dogs to popcorn-flavored ice cream. Here’s a look at five local trucks that can be booked for private events.
1. Launched in January, the Yellow Submarine food truck can be found at the corner of Kendall Drive and 147th Avenue, serving sandwiches, its signature Yellow burger, hot dogs, coffee drinks, and other beverages. Prices range from $4 to $6 and the truck can be booked for a fee of $300 for 50 people.
2. Latin Burger and Taco from Food Network chef Ingrid Hoffmann serves what the truck's name implies, burgers and tacos made with Latin ingredients. Hoffmann's burgers, $5.75 each, are made with ground chuck and chorizo and topped with Oaxacan cheese. The truck makes lunchtime rounds around Miracle Mile and Coral Gables. Rental prices start at $800 for the truck and food for 50 people.
3. Miami caterer A Joy Wallace Catering has a new BBQ and picnic production service. Five days a week the firm sets up shop with two 24- by 9-foot smokers filled with ribs and a table of fixings at three locations in South Miami. The barbecue setup can be booked for private events with elements like desserts, service attendants, and decor for an additional fee. Menu options for catering include whole chickens, chicken wings, ribs, and sides like molasses and bacon baked beans, Southern potato salad, and kettle corn. For parties under 500 people, the meats are pre-smoked at the company’s kitchen, though the smokers can be brought to the event site for an additional fee. Minimum order requirements are at least $200 for delivery and pickup and $1,500 for a catered picnic with food, rentals, and drinks.
4. Stationed in the Wynwood art district, A Chef’s Burger specializes in certified Angus beef burgers. The truck serves burgers to order with a variety of toppings such as cheese and sautéed mushrooms and peppers. Grilling options, like an 8-ounce patty brushed with a spicy soy marinade, are also available so guests can design their own burgers. Also on offer: four kinds of French fries, buffalo chicken wings with seven sauce and dipping options, and various sandwiches and salads. Pricing for event catering varies.
5. In early March, Michael’s Genuine Food and Drink celebrated its third anniversary in the design district with the creation of its MGFD Cart. The street cart serves an abbreviated form of the restaurant's menu by head chef Michael Schwartz and pastry chef Hedy Goldberg. The menu, which changes daily, typically includes a drink, snack, main dish, and dessert. Recent items included housemade sausage sandwiches, kasha knishes, and homemade buttered popcorn ice cream. Items typically range from $3 to $6 each; event catering pricing varies.
