The Washington Humane Society held its sixth annual Sugar & Champagne Affair on Thursday night, filling the glass atrium of the Galleria at Lafayette Centre with dogs of all sizes, shapes, and barks. Ever animal-friendly, the group invited guests to bring their dogs along for a sampling of champagne and desserts from local pastry chefs.
“Its not your typical Thursday night,” said Humane Society director of marketing and communications Tara de Nicolas. “But it’s great because it’s the same people you normally see, but now they can bring their dogs.”Todd and Ellen Gray of Equinox Restaurant hosted the event, which featured dozens of dessert offerings, including a butterscotch pudding with Louisiana open-kettle cane syrup and dog-bone-shaped biscuits from David Guas of Damgoodsweet Consulting Group, a pyramid of cupcakes from Buzz Bakery, artisanal gelato from Dolcezza, and gourmet pet snacks from Doggie Style Bakery.
Tables were set simply with tulip arrangements from Whole Foods on cut-out pieces of AstroTurf, while details around the space (such as the plastic hydrants surrounded by white picket fencing) were reminders that the night was not about the people. Guests could also make use of the photographer on hand for studio shots—the ultimate party favor for the ultimate pet lover.
