Librarians Take Over the District

The American Library Association kicks off its annual conference—the world’s largest gathering of librarians—in Washington this weekend, with the event running from Saturday to Wednesday. More than 26,000 attendees are expected to attend, taking over 8,452 rooms on the conference’s peak night (equaling nearly a quarter of the city’s available rooms).

Last held in the district in 2000, the conference is generating a total of 42,000 room nights and will be taking over 160,000 square feet of exhibition space at the Washington Convention Center.

Some big-name authors-turned-speakers will be in town, including David Baldacci, Judy Blume, and Patricia Cornwell. Also on tap is a “Parade of Bookmobiles” on Tuesday that will travel from the convention center to Franklin Square. The conference will return to the district in 2013.
