Fashion Evolution was the theme in 2017, when the event was held at Daniels Spectrum and more than 3,000 trailblazing fashionistas admired the works of some 40 designers. New this year: a focus on L.G.B.T. models, models with tattoos, and those with different body sizes. Next: April 2018

Iris Apfel received the inaugural Style Icon Award at this year’s red-carpet award show that celebrates achievement and emerging talent in Canadian fashion. The Fairmont Royal York hosted again in 2017, and about 700 people attended. New sponsors included Facebook and retailer Simons. Next: April 2018

The nonprofit Fashion Incubator celebrated its 30th anniversary this year and moved its sold-out show to the raw and edgy Waterworks. Glen Baxter hosted 400 guests, and one budding designer won $30,000 toward a future collection. New sponsors included RBC and Belvedere Vodka. Next: Spring 2018

#5 Fashion Industry Event (up from #6)
Organizers launched several satellite events last year, including the 81-pound challenge in Toronto—named to highlight the fact that the average person throws away 81 pounds of textiles—and Eco Fashion Week Seattle. The Vancouver Week hosted six feature designers, 14 showroom designers, and eight students. Value Village returned as a sponsor. Next: Spring 2018

Edmonton
#6 Fashion Industry Event
Organizers for this year’s fall shows, returning to the ATB Financial Art Barns through Friday with new sponsor NYX Cosmetics, were expecting about 4,000 attendees. The event, celebrating diverse cultural communities and Canadian Aboriginal designers, was successful in welcoming disabled models last season. Next: Spring 2018
