Scenesters seeking hors d'oeuvres and three-syllable cocktails found neither at Fader and Levi's "Lowlife" MTV Video Music Awards after-party. Taking over Splashlight Studios, the event kept décor to a minimum, focusing instead on a successful convergence of indie kids (and their cult leader, Parker Posey), hip-hoppers and music industry types. Event planner Lacy Maxwell of Lacy Maxwell Productions hired Melchior Productions to coordinate socialite DJ Marc Ronson with five other musical acts, including Goldfinger and hip-hop perennial Doo Wop. “We tried to capture a more gritty New York in the 80's with emphasis on the lost nightclub feel—a collision of music and scenes,” said Fader event director Jeannine Magno—hence the unadorned cement floor, the free-flowing liquor and Red Stripe beer (served up by the all-male Urban barstaff), and an open-air terrace that let New York's remaining smokers light up and cool down.
Like Maverick's post-VMA bash, the party had guests playing games: This time Electronic Arts Sports and Xbox took center stage, with three flat-screen stations offering players a turn at the Tiger Woods experience with golf video games. For a bit of hands-off entertainment, projected videos of rock performances provided a fitting backdrop to the music-fueled scene. Spirits were high, and, not surprisingly, so was the volume: Stacked speakers courtesy of See Factor kept partygoers moving well into the morning.
