LOS ANGELES—While COVID restrictions have slowly begun to lift, drive-in events don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Case in point: Amazon Prime Video’s immersive drive-thru experience, coupled with a drive-in screening, to celebrate its newest original series Invincible. Based on the comic book written by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman, the adult animated series stars Sandra Oh, Steven Yeun and J. K. Simmons—with star-studded cameos from the likes of Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Mark Hamill and Mahershala Ali.
With such buzzy names behind it, it’s fitting that the screening created buzz of its own. Taking over the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., on March 26 and 27, the socially distanced drive-thru featured costumed actors, green-screen photo ops and some pretty memorable surprise and delight moments. (Fake blood and pyrotechnics, anyone?)
The free, contactless event, which required advance reservations and quickly sold out, allowed fans to travel through various scenes from the show as their car radios offered up fictional commercials and PSAs from the series' government agency. At the end of the evening, attendees settled into designated parking spots to watch the first two episodes of the hourlong series, which follows a 17-year-old learning to follow in his superhero father's footsteps.
