MIAMI—South Florida saw the return of Miami Art Week and Art Basel Miami Beach from Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022. With the memory of the pandemic far behind it, Art Basel’s 20th anniversary—whose lead partner was UBS—saw attendance jump from 60,000 people last year to 76,000 during its run at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
“Our 20th edition was not only the largest ever but also the strongest in terms of the absolute quality of work," said Marc Spiegler, the outgoing global director of Art Basel. “And it had the most diverse range of galleries and artistic voices ever present, making this show remarkably rich in discoveries. We are immensely proud of what has been achieved with our galleries, partners, and the city's cultural community.”
Noah Horowitz, the CEO of Art Basel, added: "The city has been electric. Over the last 20 years, Greater Miami has firmly become a cultural destination of the highest order, with this week cementing itself as the apex moment in the American cultural calendar. We couldn't be more excited about what the future has in store for us here.”
In the spirit of revisiting Art Basel’s most significant moments, the fair brought back Studio Drift for the second edition of their “Franchise Freedom” drone show, which initially debuted in 2017. The evening featured 400 drones flying above the Miami Beach Convention Center with music by Joep Beving. The swarm flight “mimics the fascinating behavior of starling murmuration,” according to the artist duo.
