Just as the farmer's markets around town open, here comes the newest group activity for foodies looking for something a bit different. Food bloggers Bettina Stern and Suzanne Simon of Web site Loulies: Real Kitchens, Real Food, which has been recognized in Better Homes & Garden for its content, have launched a "Market to Kitchen" cooking series for small groups of eight or fewer.
There are five food focuses to choose from: meats, summer fruit, pickles, salsa, and sauces—though availability is dependent on whether the ingredients are in season. The experience begins at the DC Greens Farmers' Market, where Stern and Simon take groups on a 30-minute educational culinary tour. The discussion focuses on the market's offerings in conjunction with the session's topic.
The group then retires to Loulies' Georgetown location for a 90-minute cooking demonstration using ingredients from the market. The classes are priced at $25 per person, which includes light refreshments and a tasting from the demonstration. A minimum of two weeks' notice is needed for private bookings. Cooking classes and demonstrations can be arranged for larger groups on request.
