* INCOMING *
1. NATO APPEAL: Protesters are fighting for their right to march during the international summit May 20-21 after Chicago officials denied their permit. Activists originally had a permit to protest during the G-9 summit May 19, but after the president moved it to Camp David, they also sought a date change. Chicago Tribune: "But the city denied the application, saying the NATO summit was several times larger than G-8, and authorities would not have enough 'on-duty' police to handle a march in the Loop while up to 50 heads of state are moving through the streets in motorcades." http://trib.in/GP56F9
Meanwhile, "The White House ... released a couple of details about plans to entertain dignitaries during the [NATO] May meetings. They include a [working] dinner at Soldier Field and a trip to the South Side with First Lady Michelle Obama." The Chicago Tribune: http://trib.in/GJZVsD
2. POP-UP POPULARITY: The idea of a temporary restaurant is "morphing into a multipurpose tool, used by different strata of the restaurant industry to test concepts, market new brands, engage with a younger audience, or prove to landlords, lenders and investors that they are worth the risk." Wall Street Journal: http://on.wsj.com/GHXOHg
3. TOUCH PREMIERE: New York Times: "News Corporation is staging a worldwide premiere of Touch, a new drama starring Kiefer Sutherland that celebrates the very kind of interconnectivity that will allow the show to start almost simultaneously in 100 countries and territories. … Executives at News Corporation and its competitors say that Touch signifies a new way of doing business that attracts multinational advertisers (Unilever is a sponsor of the series around the world) and attacks online piracy." http://nyti.ms/GQ7ei6
4. EVERYONE'S TALKING ETCH A SKETCH: After Mitt Romney's campaign thrust the toy into the national conversation, Bloomberg reports the company is taking advantage of the free media coverage: "In its 52 years, nothing spread the name Etch a Sketch so fast and wide, said Martin Killgallon, senior vice president for marketing and product development." http://wapo.st/GPNyqf
5. DIGITAL DIS: Clive Sirkin, the newly named senior marketing officer for Kimberly-Clark Corporation, the company behind products like Kleenex, Cottonelle, and Huggies, is looking to develop a sustainable marketing model. It just might not include digital initiatives:. "It's very easy for people to translate 'lean' into low-cost provider or cheapest. That's not the exercise. Lean is effectiveness and greater return on investment. The other thing is we don't believe in digital marketing. We believe in marketing in a digital world, and there's a huge difference.," Sirkin told Ad Age. Ad Age: adage.com/article...

* THE WEEK IN EVENTS *
Here's a look at 10 highlights from our event coverage this week, including Nokia's three nights of performances at South by Southwest, Skype users interacting with music at the festival, the Victoria's Secret Miami spring break pool party, Julianna Margulies at the Steppenwolf theater in Chicago, and Glenfiddich's 125th-anniversary gala and live auction. bizbash.com/the_w...
* TREND MEMO: DIFFA *
Last night Diffa hosted a cocktail party to open its annual Dining by Design exhibit of table concepts at Pier 94 in New York. Two of the trends we saw:
* Restrained color palettes: Several tables skipped bright colors for a mix of creams and tans, white and off-white, wood tones, or metallics and black.
* Few florals: There weren't many flowers on tables at all, perhaps because flower-favoring event designers David Beahm and Marc Wilson sat this year out.
Style editor Lauren Matthews will have a full report—with plenty of photos—on bizbash.com next week. In the meantime, check out what we posted to Twitter last night: http://twitter.com/#!/bizbash_news
