* INCOMING *

1. HASHTAG SLIP-UP:
 Yesterday's Twitter chat hosted by the Federal Communications Commission failed to gather much steam, as chairman Julius Genachowski forgot to use the event's official hashtag. Adweek: "As one tweeter noted, it was a rookie mistake. Genachowski can be forgiven, but it's hard to believe there aren't any social media geniuses at the FCC who could have made sure the chairman of the agency in charge of the nation's airwaves and telecommunications didn't blow it. Bottom line? For an agency emphasizing policies to expand Internet broadband and find more wireless spectrum to meet rising demand, this just didn't look good." http://bit.ly/NmNaYk

2. GOOGLE'S NEW HOTSPOTS:
 Google has teamed up with Boingo Wireless to offer Google Play: 4,000 free-of-charge Wi-Fi hotspots that allow advertisers to reach a huge audience of consumers in a global advertising network in airports, Manhattan subway stations, hotels, malls, and cafés. Mashable: “'Google Play is the first to take part in our newly expanded Wi-Fi sponsorship network, which reaches millions of consumers each month with place-based brand engagements,' said Dawn Callahan, vice president of consumer marketing for Boingo Wireless, in a statement. 'Sponsorships like this give users the free Wi-Fi they crave, advertisers the consumer interaction they need, and venues the revenue to offset the costs associated with providing a high-bandwidth Wi-Fi experience.'” http://on.mash.to/PpFAMP

3. EXECUTIVE MOVES:
 Michael Francis, Target's former chief marketing officer and, most recently, J.C. Penney president, is joining Gap Inc. as the company's first marketing creative adviser. Ad Age: "Mr. Francis has long been a power player in marketing circles and will most certainly bring fresh ideas to Gap Inc.'s brands … But Mr. Francis will also surely provide insight when it comes to global expansion. He had been overseeing Target's Canadian expansion before departing for J.C. Penney last fall." http://bit.ly/OdiKDH

4. COMIC COMMUNICATION:
 Rajiv Satyal, formerly a marketer for P&G and now a full-time comedian who does comedy shows for corporate innovation sessions, suggests brands and agencies can learn some things from comics and their jokes.Ad Age: "It's all about insights. Both marketers and comedians depend heavily on insights about human behavior, Mr. Satyal said … Accentuate the absurd. 'Just like marketers, the best comics propose solutions,' Mr. Satyal said. These are preferably unexpected ones." http://bit.ly/QPbRcD

5. BEST TRAVEL TAX CITIES:
 A study by the Global Business Travel Association reported that taxes on travel-related services like car rentals and hotels are 57 percent higher than regular sales tax. With a list of the highest and lowest travel taxes in cities, Fort Lauderdale rates number one. Fox News: http://fxn.ws/UHezF6

* INTERNAL NEWS *

BizBash C.E.O. David Adler and learning consultant Andrea Sullivan wrote a piece for The Huffington Post about the political conventions and how neuroscience supports the power for face-to-face gatherings: "Political campaigns demand levels of trust and commitment that are best generated face-to-face. Humans respond deeply and profoundly to the unique chemistry of community that arises when we gather together. There are some who say that eliminating gatherings is one of the primary benefits of the electronically enabled world. They have some strong arguments, including spreadsheets that detail travel costs and case histories of 'Meetings Gone Wild.' But their advice is faulty." http://huff.to/Pix6Hp
