Joining the fray of movies looking to the 1980s for inspiration is Tron: Legacy, which opens in theaters December 17. And joining the lineup of holiday-season pop-up shops springing up around town is one dedicated to merchandise and displays inspired by that movie. Royal/T, the 10,000-square-foot art and exhibition venue with café and retail space in Culver City, is the site of Disney Consumer Products pop-up, which celebrating its opening on November 18 and will stand through December 23. Disney Consumer Products executive vice president of fashion and home Pamela Lifford is overseeing the shop, in collaboration with Larry Abel Designs for the production and design. It's the first concept pop-up ever for Disney Consumer Products.
Inspired by the safe house seen in the upcoming film, the shop's design consists of clean lines and curves, and open spaces illuminated with natural and artificial light to give it a modern, digital look and feel. "We built the store virtually from scratch around cement floors, brick walls, and clear acrylic panels," said Abel. "One of the biggest challenges was creating the look of seamless light on the acrylic shelves. In the design, we wanted to capture the great design aesthetic of the movie and create an environment that makes people want to come in and explore all of the fantastic merchandise."
Lifford said in a release, “Our Tron: Legacy merchandise line offers a wide range of items for all—whether you’re a die-hard fan or just an avid fan of design, imagination, and technology. We’ve had great response from fans on the line overall, and the Tron pop-up shop is a special way to bring it all together for them while spotlighting those one-of-a-kind pieces they can’t find anywhere else.”
The shop sells merchandise from the likes of Adidas, Hurley, Oakley, and other vendors, with new products introduced regularly throughout the program’s six-week duration. Giveaways and prizes are also on tap for visitors throughout the run, with events including a December 17 promotion in which fans can trade their movie ticket stubs for a Tron keepsake, and a December 18 family day with art activities.
A special cafe menu includes a "Reco" burger with buffalo sauce, chipotle aioli, and fried onion rings; a "Lightcycle" salad with endives, caramelized oranges, and toasted pecans in a yuzu vinaigrette; an "Identity Disk" cake with white chocolate lava cake and blueberry sauce; and a Tron: Legacy high tea set featuring assorted sweets and savory canapés, served with a choice of tea.
