LOS ANGELES—In the lead-up to this year’s Emmy nominations voting, which runs June 15-26, networks and streaming services tried to woo voters with immersive experiences promoting their potential award-winning shows. (The Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced July 12.)
Although the current writers’ strike cast a shadow over this year’s campaigning, TV industry mainstays including Disney, Netflix, NBC, and Apple TV+ continued with their “For Your Consideration” plans, which were in the works well before the Writers Guild of America deal had expired. But showrunners and writers were told not to participate in any official network and studio Emmy FYC events.
To celebrate its Emmy-contending series, Paramount Global hosted a physical manifestation of the content from across its portfolio of brands that included interactive rooms and themed installations inspired by shows from Comedy Central, MTV, Paramount+, Paramount Network, and Showtime at The Hollywood Athletic Club in Los Angeles May 12-21.
Produced by MKG, the space featured a bar at the 1923 experience with the series’ costumes and props, a replica of Rydell High from Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Tulsa King’s “Bred 2 Buck Saloon,” and the spooky Yellowjackets compound, and there were also installations from George & Tammy, Couples Therapy, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Star Trek: Picard, The Daily Show, and Ziwe. The showcase also hosted screenings and panel discussions with cast and creators.
“This was certainly a first for Paramount,” said Deva Kehoe, SVP of talent relations, events, and promotions at Paramount. “We used the power of our portfolio to give voters a one-stop shop to interact with unique programming and talent from across Comedy Central, MTV, Paramount+, Paramount Network, and Showtime."
As for the venue selection, Kehoe explained that the company was “looking for an iconic Hollywood location that had the same prestige as Paramount’s storied brand.” The Hollywood Athletic Club fit the bill, and its “expansive layout also allowed us the opportunity to build out custom experiences that were inclusive of a screening room, interactive spaces, and themed installations, alongside a competitive lineup of programming,” she added.
