Once a month, BizBash brings you even more inspiration for your own gatherings with our "Cool Event Ideas of the Month" column, where we round up some of the creative ideas we haven't had the chance to cover yet.

Our January 2024 roundup includes frozen billboards that melted to reveal hidden messages; a "pickleball spa" set in the Canadian wilderness; an upscale football-themed VIP lounge; an over-the-top Lunar New Year display; and more from brands like Peacock, ESPN, HBO, Resy, American Express, and MoĂ«t & Chandon.

As HBO launched the highly anticipated fourth season of True Detective on Jan. 14, passersby in New York and Los Angeles discovered icy billboards that evoked the show's Alaska setting. The ads featured giant blocks of ice that held abandoned clothing and shoes.

Bellagio's Conservatory & Botanical Gardens' Year of the Dragon Display
Bellagio's Conservatory & Botanical Gardens' Year of the Dragon Display
In celebration of Lunar New Year, the Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens has unveiled its new display called “Infinite Prosperity: The Year of the Dragon,” on view through March 2. A collaborative effort between designer Ed Libby and Bellagio’s horticulture team, the exhibit draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of Asian architecture, folklore, and culture.

The display uses floral arrangements and decor to pay homage to various aspects of the Year of the Dragon. The West Bed, for example, features a 30-foot-tall replica of the Temple of Six Banyan Trees. A dragon descends from billowy clouds above the bed, holding a larger-than-life pearl that represents good luck, strength, prosperity, and health. Nearby, a waterfall cascades over mossy rocks into the pond below, signifying the cleansing essence of the new year. Bronze ding pots, scattered throughout the bed and across the exhibit, evoke ancient traditions, expressing gratitude for the past year and the hope for continued good fortune.

At the North Bed, Caishen—the Chinese god of wealth—sits among an abundance of gold coins. Children play among the coins, while the background features bursts of colorful fireworks and cascading gold I-Ching coins on LED screens. Shiny gold money trees are adorned with 88 I-Ching coins each—a nod to the lucky number eight.

In the East Bed, a tiered pagoda complements a pearl-shaped fountain, surrounded by suspended cloisonné cherry blossom sculptures. Emerald stalks of bamboo stand amid the bright floral landscape. (A popular motif in world art, literature, and philosophy, bamboo is often associated with renewal, vitality, and prosperity, explained the Bellagio team.) Pink and white flowers adorn the branches of the cherry blossom trees, meant to represent a time of renewal and optimism while reminding everyone to appreciate life’s fragility and transience.
