The Los Angeles area is known for a lot of things, but it's rarely referred to as a city that never sleeps. And although that reputation is not likely to change overnight (so to speak), one 12-hour festival in Santa Monica this weekend may change some long-held perceptions.

On July 19, the seaside city will host a free dusk-until-dawn party. Called Glow, the program will be filled with live art exhibitions, entertainment, and music. It starts at 7 p.m. and is scheduled to continue until 7 a.m.Glow will feature interactive exhibitions and entertainment on the Santa Monica pier, carousel, Muscle Beach, Palisades Park, and Ocean Avenue. The festival has commissioned a piece by light and sound artist Usman Haque, and artist Shih Chieh Huang will showcase an installation of common objects like water bottles and plastic bags that he transforms with light and air. An orchestra will perform live on the baskets of the Ferris wheel at Pacific Park. Local restaurants, hotels, and retailers will offer extended hours and special menu offerings.

Glow takes its inspiration from the Paris festival Nuit Blanche that attracted more than a million people in 2007 and is now being held in other cities like Madrid, Rome, Tel Aviv, and Montreal. The City of Santa Monica, Bayside District Corporation, Pier Restoration Corporation, and the Santa Monica Convention and Visitors Bureau are presenting the festival. The Norton Family Foundation is among the sponsors.
