The Comedy Stop, a Vegas Standby, Moves to the Sahara

Take a group looking for laughs to the new home of the Comedy Stop on the Strip. The city’s longest-running comedy club, which resided for 19 years at the Tropicana, moved to the 650-seat Congo Room at the Sahara on July 20, bringing its popular format of seven-nights-a-week entertainment from three new comedians each Monday. The space is available for buyouts for performances, and there are group discounts for tickets.

Bob Kephart founded and owns the club. “You can’t expect people to sit through two mediocre comedians waiting for the big guy,” he said about his formula. “What made Comedy Stop different from the beginning is that, I always spent more money on the opening acts than other comedy clubs—many openers were headliners in other rooms. I wanted to create excitement and fun from the start of the evening and then build to a crescendo.”

Although the comedy club originally attracted a 25 to 40 demographic, it now gets groups that range in age from 25 to 75. Much of that is because Kephart, who has 150 comedians in his stable and introduces three or four new faces each year, doesn’t let the comedians get into X-rated material—a potential bonus for business entertaining.
