May 6, 2013: Rethinking the Gala, Live Nation Invests in EDM, Event Planners Optimistic

1. RETHINKING THE MAJOR GALA: Toronto philanthropist Salah Bachir, known as "Gala Salah," recently invited friends to a fund-raiser that had one noticeable twist: It wasn't a gala at all, just a request to send money. Toronto Globe and Mail: "Clearly, the era of flashy and formal black-tie fundraisers … is over. Today, organizers are appealing to a younger generation with fundraisers that feel more spontaneous and laid-back, such as salon-style events in private homes. 'It’s all about making the experience more intimate, private, and exclusive,' says seasoned philanthropist Danny Greenglass." http://bit.ly/102vm9X

2. LIVE NATION BUYS STAKE IN ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL PRODUCER: Live Nation will acquire a stake in Insomniac Events, the company that produces the Electric Daisy Carnival. Reports value the stake at $50 million. The popular festival drew 300,000 people to Las Vegas last year, but the company isn't without challenges: company head Pasquale Rotella is facing bribery charges and more than a dozen drug-related deaths have occurred at its shows. 3. KIDS' STATE DINNER RETURNS: First Lady Michelle Obama will again host a Kids' State Dinner. Children will create an original lunch recipe that is healthy, affordable, and tasty. Contest winners and their parents will earn a trip to Washington for the event, to take place this summer, and some of the winning dishes will be served. recipechallenge.epicurious.com.

4. SURVEY SHOWS OPTIMISM IN EVENTS INDUSTRY: Meeting and event planners are organizing more events and expect to have higher budgets, according to IMEX America's Index of Optimism Survey. More than two-thirds of the 400 respondents said they were "more optimistic” than at this time last year. Press release:  http://bit.ly/10iPt0t
