When the Downtown Orlando Foundation opted to add entertainment to the annual O-Ball fund-raiser for the first time this year, foundation co-chairwoman and vice president of community relations Susan Chapin went all out. She hired D Squared Productions Inc., which scheduled entertainers for every moment of the evening, from the jesters on stilts who greeted guests outside the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre to the Venetian clowns who handed out goodies at the end of the night.
In between, 450 young professionals and local officials listened to a jazz trio in the center's atrium as Hue Restaurant passed hors d'oeuvres. Since there was no ambient lighting in the atrium, D Squared brought in a lamp performer—a man in gold body paint and metallic outfit who struck poses on a platform bearing a three-foot light ball from Airstar Space Lighting.
Showgirls posed for photos with guests before the buffet-style dinner was served. Red lighting added to the cabaret feel of tall tables with red and black linens topped with red roses, candles, and peacock feathers. After dinner, the main attraction was three Broadway-inspired numbers: "Le Jazz Hot" from Victor/Victoria, "All That Jazz" from Chicago, and "Big Spender" from Sweet Charity. The last number seemed to work—the event raised more than $10,000.
