As scleroderma continues to puzzle much of the medical community, the Hollywood community is still raising money to fight it. This year marked the Scleroderma Research Foundation's 16th annual "Cool Comedy, Hot Cuisine" benefit at the Regent Beverly Wilshire, with foundation board member (not to mention fictional Olsen twin parent) Bob Saget serving as M.C. Charles Spaulding, the foundation's vice president of communications, oversaw the event.Onstage, the Dick Bright Orchestra played big band standards while, at earth-toned tabletops, 520 guests supped on roast black cod with parsnip puree, braised beef short rib, and warm date dessert dishes from Border Grill and Ciudad owner-chefs Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken.
Following dinner, Saget presented a video about scleroderma and spoke of his late sister's battle with the disease. But in keeping with the upbeat tone of the evening, he was soon joined onstage by former Full House costar John Stamos to present a live auction. With items including a Montana adventure trip, a V.I.P. dinner at Grace restaurant, a San Francisco and Napa Valley excursion, and a private cocktail party held on the roof of the U.S. Bank building downtown, the auction raised $55,000 for the foundation in 20 minutes.
Comedians Ray Romano and Jeff Ross capped off the evening with comedy routines before guests went home. They were sent away with gift bags that included Voluspa candles, Corazon tequila, gift certificates for a reiki and massage therapy session from Marla Mervis at Centre For Life…and, fittingly, a Full House DVD.
