For Anniversary, Models Bring Guess Ads to Life

Guess celebrated its 25th birthday by bringing in live models to recreate its vintage ad campaigns.

September 15, 2006
What do you do when you turn 25? You celebrate what you’re best known for. And for Guess, it’s the brand’s bombshell poster girls—among them Claudia, Naomi, and Paris. Held in conjunction with Condé Nast Media Group and the televised Fashion Rocks concert, the fashion label’s 25th anniversary celebration took place at Capitale and entertained more than 700 guests with live tableaux vivants. “This was one of the first events to kick off the Fashion Rocks week and we wanted to take Guess’ iconic images and bring them to life,” said Chip Quigley, owner of Kingdom Entertainment Group, which produced the event.
The tableaux vivants took place in Capitale’s front room, which had a white uplit bar and a white carpet (that managed to stay white on the rainy night). Six models supplied by New York Model Management posed on raised podiums in front of enormous black-and-white posters featuring ads from the past 25 years. Thanks to make-up, hair, and clothing adjustments, the models mirrored the poster girls, complete with set pieces ranging from a chaise lounge and a beach chair to a giant bail of hay.

Inside the venue’s ballroom, red lights shined against the 65-foot walls, and the stage, adorned with a lit-up Guess logo, was the centerpiece of the room, awaiting performers Natasha Bedingfield and KT Tunstall. “We had a big Guess sign over the stage, which clearly branded the room, so the rest of the Guess imaging had to be subtle—we embedded it into the decor,” said Quigley, who placed circular white leather ottomans and chairs throughout the room to create mini lounge areas, each dotted with satin pillows bearing black-and-white Guess ads.
“It was almost a black-and-white ball, with the signature red threaded throughout the entire venue,” said Deborah Lee, a freelance producer for Condé Nast, who coordinated the party with Guess’ Malia O’Brien. Hundreds of candles also sparkled in the ballroom, alongside dozens of framed photos of the famous Guess girls.

“We once had a premiere for a show that was set in New Orleans, and transitioning 250 guests from the screening room to the after-party was an opportunity for us to enhance the experience by bringing in a New Orleans-style second line band—who led the entire audience across a busy NYC street,' remembers Vox Media's Tara Reilly. 'It not only created a smooth transition, but it gave our audience an unexpected experience that was memorable and sparked conversation.”
