Boys & Girls Clubs Sells Out Gala Despite Price Hike

Lola Thelin
November 16, 2011
Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade raised the ticket price for its fifth annual Wild About Kids Gala by $50, yet the event Saturday night not only sold out but had to turn away interested guests. While that is good news for the nonprofit, it also means the event may not be able to return to the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove next year.

“Our gala has continued to grow and, as much as I loved the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove for this year, it is going to be unfortunate but very likely that I will have to move the location next year,” said Astrid Ehrenstein, the director of special events and development for the organization. “Their maximum capacity is 330 and we’re at 330.”

Despite raising the price from $250 to $300, tickets sold out days before the event, and organizers had to turn away approximately two dozen people who inquired about attending. Organizers estimate the event raised more than $110,000 for the nonprofit.

During the reception, guests sipped on cocktails provided by Bacardi, Winn-Dixie, and Eppa Sangria, while placing bids on 84 silent auction items. In the ballroom, Gil Sosa Design created two different centerpieces for the 32 dinner tables, one with dendrobium orchid blossoms with willow branches and another with white calla lilies with a monstera leaf. As dinner began, the 10-piece Junior’s Band Orchestra provided entertainment.

The evening ended with guests having hot cocoa and desserts from Sugarsweet Dreams Cake Company as they waited for their vehicles from the valet.

Moving guests from one room to another can be an unexpected place for some surprise-and-delight moments.
“We once had a premiere for a show that was set in New Orleans, and transitioning 250 guests from the screening room to the after-party was an opportunity for us to enhance the experience by bringing in a New Orleans-style second line band—who led the entire audience across a busy NYC street,' remembers Vox Media's Tara Reilly. 'It not only created a smooth transition, but it gave our audience an unexpected experience that was memorable and sparked conversation.”
