Washington has a love affair with acronyms. That’s due to the city’s countless government agencies and nonprofits with unbearably long names appropriate for shorthand. Last week, the Washington, D.C., Convention & Tourism Corporation (or W.C.T.C.) announced it was shedding its four-letter association and rebranding to a more memorable title: Destination D.C.
The nonprofit marketing organization, which works with more than 1,000 local businesses, sees the new name as more indicative of its mission to promote conventions, tourism, and events for Washington. “We exist to convince meeting planners, individual travelers, and tour operators to choose D.C. as their next destination,” said chairman Dan Mesches, president of Star Restaurant Group, in a release. Destination D.C. will continue to reveal its new marketing strategy on April 2, at a press conference with Mayor Adrian Fenty.
