* INCOMING *
1. UNSOCIAL C.E.O.s: Company heads drastically lag behind the general population when it comes to social media participation. Fewer than 8 percent of Fortune 500 C.E.O.s are on Facebook and just 4 percent are on Twitter, a survey from data startup Domo shows. Forbes: "The primary reason you have to be social is because that is where your customer lives. Even if you are not leveraging it to close business and interact with your customers, you have to spend enough time online to at least understand the shift in the world. … CEOs have a responsibility to their shareholders to be visible. CEOs who shun social media risk losing touch with some of their most lucrative customers, prospects and influencers." http://onforb.es/N6KJsu
2. MTV RETURNS TO MUSIC: A new concert series from MTV and Intel is trying to reimagine the live experience and help Intel sell its Ultrabook laptop. The nationwide tour begins Thursday in Manhattan. New York Times: "Those who want to attend must use the Twitter hashtag #musicexperiment to get information on the venue and where they can pickup tickets. Attendees will be asked to follow a dress code for the night’s Vaudevillian circus theme. Video and other media from the concert will be featured in online clips and on social media platforms like Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram." http://nyti.ms/PVAe87
3. GAY MARRIAGE IMPACT: Same-sex marriages in New York generated an estimated $259 million economic boost, raking in another $16 million in revenue according to a study from NYC & Co. and the city clerk's office released one year after the Marriage Equality Act was passed. Crain's New York Business: "More than 201,000 guests traveled from outside of the city to attend the weddings, with more than 235,000 hotel room nights booked at an average daily room rate of $275." http://bit.ly/MFL9Dr
4. STATE FARM DROPS PENN STATE: The insurance company has dropped its nearly 20-year advertising support of the football team because of the child sex abuse scandal that this week drew drastic N.C.A.A. penalties expected to cripple the program. Adweek: "Due to the deplorable nature of the crimes involved, it’s possible that other brands will follow State Farm's lead and cancel ads for 2012 Penn State football. That's not going to be particularly easy for the university to stomach; according to Penn State's records, the football program accounts for more than half (51 percent) of the PSU athletic department’s total revenue—$58.9 million of $116.1 million in FY 2011." http://bit.ly/OXjoEF
5. SUPER BOWL SPONSOR: Pepsi announced it will sponsor this year's Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans February 3. The multiyear deal marks an extension of the brand's "Live for Now" campaign and includes 60 seconds of advertising during the game's broadcast. Press Release: http://bloom.bg/OBYFq7
