Nylon special events manager Rena Fischler was all set for an event celebrating the magazine's music issue, and cover girl Kelly Osbourne was to host. Four days before the scheduled event date—and long after the invitations had gone out—Fischler got a call from Osbourne's publicists with the news that the singer had been checked into rehab. It was awful to hear," Fischler says, "but we knew it wasn't just against us—she canceled all her events for that week." Maybe so, but Nylon's party would go on, and Fischler had a scant few days to fill the host job.
The Daily got word of the hiccup and published a story online, speculating who might replace Osbourne as the evening's headline entertainment. The day before the party, Fischler put together a last-minute press release to address the circulating gossip: "Nylon's highly anticipated annual music event tomorrow evening will go on. We have been informed Kelly Osbourne, Nylon cover girl and host, has entered a facility due to personal issues," the alert said.
With the Prosaics and the Misshapes still on board as originally planned, Fischler looked to Glasgow-based band Franz Ferdinand to fill the headline hole, eventually securing drummer Paul Thomson with the help of Nylon editor in chief Marvin Scott Jarrett's industry connections. DJ Junior Sanchez joined the lineup the night before the party as well.
All told, the last-minute scramble yielded a quality group of musicians, and was all but transparent to the attendees. Nylon hosted more than 500 guests that evening—just the number that was planned—and the dance floor was packed all night long, sans Osbourne. "It was a great party, and no one really seemed to mind [the change]," Fischler says. "People emailed me to say, 'I heard something about Kelly being in rehab. Add me to the list plus one.' People know these things just happen."
