The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is hosting an official welcome ceremony for its new executive chef, Philippe Chin, this Thursday. City council members and other guests will meet Chin and get a sneak preview of his cuisine. The former chef of the Partridge Inn in Augusta, Georgia, took on the position in early June.

Chin is overseeing a team of four managing chefs and 31 other kitchen members and creating all menus offered at the convention center’s events, including last Friday's Radio and Television Correspondents' Association dinner, where President Obama spoke. (Our coverage of MSNBC's after-party is here.) Chin is replacing chef Greg Sharpe, who moved to the Baltimore Convention Center.

A James Beard Foundation nominee for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic in 1997, Chin was the chef and owner of Chanterelles and executive chef of Philippe on Locust in Philadelphia.

Chin specializes in French-Asian cuisine, which reflects his ethnic background. The 46-year-old is the youngest inductee of the Maîtres Cuisiniers de France organization and trained at L'École Hôtelière de Paris.
