July 17, 2015: Japan Reveals Delays to New Olympic Stadium, the Toughest Part of Planning a Business Dinner, How Nonprofit Groups Dominate This Trade Show Sector

1. JAPAN REVEALS DELAYS TO NEW OLYMPIC STADIUM: Japan, host to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, said its proposed stadium will not be ready for its debut for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Reuters: “Its proposed design will be scrapped to cut costs and it won't be ready in time, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Friday. The stadium, which is also set to be the centrepiece for the 2020 Olympics Games in Tokyo, had been scheduled to hold both the opening match and the final of the first rugby World Cup ever held in Asia.” http://yhoo.it/1HD53tz

2. THE TOUGHEST PART OF PLANNING A BUSINESS DINNER: When planning business dinners, chasing down guests who fail to reply to invitations is one of the most frustrating tasks for event planners, according to etiquette expert Peter Post. Boston Globe: “Event planners are more frustrated by the lack of courtesy shown by invitees who don’t respond than by any other part of the event planning process. Even if you don’t know if you can attend, be sure to respond right away and explain that you have received the invitation and will let the organizer know by a certain date. Then, be sure to follow up by that date with your response. Otherwise, event planners are left having to call recalcitrant invitees, a chore which takes time and is galling to have to do.” http://bit.ly/1M9usAw

3. HOW NONPROFIT GROUPS DOMINATE THIS TRADE SHOW SECTOR: Seven of the 10 largest anime conventions in North America are nonprofit enterprises, and the largest, Anime Expo, is run by people who started out as fans and volunteers who have taken over running the show. Now, more than 100,000 people attend the event, which claimed a $55 million economic impact to host city Los Angeles in 2014. The host organization, the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation, also produces five conferences that gather the other nonprofits in the sector to share best practices. Forbes: “A lot of them are actually pretty proud of being non-profit,” said Marlan Moore, who coordinates the conferences. “It shows they haven’t sold out, that they’re fans first and they’re trying to promote the fandom.” http://onforb.es/1GoZZHq
