1. WHY THE EMMYS MATTER EVEN MORE NOW: The explosion of quality television and of nontraditional outlets like Amazon and Netflix creating original content has boosted the profile of the Emmy awards—a change that’s also been profitable for the event industry that helps networks celebrate their achievements. Los Angeles Times: “The television business has been reshaped by an explosion in the number of original series and the emergence of technologies that have enabled viewers to access programming in a number of ways. Although the Emmy has always been coveted as the TV award most recognized by the public because of the annual telecast of its ceremony on broadcast television (airing on Fox this Sunday), its role as a marketing tool has been magnified in the medium's new, complicated universe. … HBO's commitment to capturing Emmy gold has been annually signified in its lavish after-parties. This year, Amazon demonstrates its commitment with its first-time post-Emmy soiree at the Standard in downtown Los Angeles.” http://lat.ms/1MpCsyW
2. HOTEL BOOM DESIGNED TO LURE CONVENTION BUSINESS: Cities like Kansas City are building new convention center hotels to attract meeting and convention business, although not all experts are convinced that they’re a good investment. The New York Times: “From Seattle to Miami Beach, cities are chasing convention hotel development, typically of 600 to 1,200 rooms. The goal is to attract groups whose members will put money into the pockets of waitresses, bartenders, shopkeepers and cabdrivers — as well as the public till. … Strong news about the lodging industry and improving exhibition and trade show business are helping to drive the developments. … The need to stay competitive is behind the buildup, too. That means not only boasting about ample room supply, but also simplifying the lives of meeting planners by giving them two or three lodging contracts instead of seven or eight.” http://nyti.ms/1igNKbI
3. POPE FRANCIS TO GIVE SPEECHES IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH: During his visit to the United States next week, Pope Francis will only give four of his 18 speeches in English, the Vatican announced Tuesday; the rest will be in his native Spanish. CBS News: “Two of Francis' major speeches will be in English: his remarks at the White House and speech to Congress, the first ever by a pope. Francis will also deliver English greetings to U.N. staff and benefactors in Philadelphia. But his homilies at a canonization in Washington, his big Mass in Madison Square Garden and at the Catholic Church's world family conference in Philadelphia will be in Spanish, as will his address to the U.N.” http://cbsn.ws/1gpajti
