April 14, 2017: Cannes Film Festival's Lineup Announced, Facebook's Developer Conference Sets Sights on VR, Obama's Social Secretary Fetes Trump's Choice

1. CANNES FILM FESTIVAL'S LINEUP ANNOUNCED: Yesterday, the lineup for the 70th Cannes Film Festival, which takes place May 17 to 28, was announced. Many of the featured films focus on political issues, including An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, former Vice President Al Gore's follow-up to his 2006 film, An Inconvenient Truth, about climate change. CNN: "'We are in a suspenseful moment for the world. Since we have a new surprise every day from Donald Trump, I hope Syria and North Korea will not cause a shadow on the festival,' said Cannes Film Festival president Pierre Lescure." http://cnn.it/2owjAHN

2. FACEBOOK'S DEVELOPER CONFERENCE SETS SIGHTS ON VR: Facebook’s annual F8 developer conference, which will be held in San Jose, California, on April 18 and 19, will feature more virtual-reality programming than in years past, with talks and sessions on social VR, VR gaming, and web-based VR experiences. It's also rumored that the social-media company may debut the latest prototype of its standalone VR headset. Variety: "[Mark] Zuckerberg had already warned audiences at last year’s Oculus Connect conference that it was early days for the company’s standalone VR headset. The company may nonetheless be looking to share it early on with developers." http://bit.ly/2pz3Hhl

3. OBAMA'S SOCIAL SECRETARY FETES TRUMP'S CHOICE: Deesha Dyer, the Obama administration's last social secretary, held an intimate dinner for President Donald Trump's social secretary, Anna Cristina Niceta Lloyd, this past Tuesday at Central Michel Richard in Washington. Regardless of political affiliations, it's tradition for former social secretaries to toast the next in line. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "There were lots of hugs and selfies going around the table at the two-hour dinner during which Central's famous fried chicken played a starring role. None of the other guests in the dining room recognized the big names chatting mere tables away, but that's the point, isn't it? Social secretaries, despite their high-profile, high-stakes gig, are background players." http://bit.ly/2pbA4Gm
