1. SEACREST BUYS CIVIC ENTERTAINMENT: New York Times: "Ryan Seacrest has bought a controlling stake in the Civic Entertainment Group, a 12-year-old marketing agency that has helped to create events like the CNN Grill and NBC’s Education Nation. … Civic, which has 45 employees, has been behind prominent campaigns for clients like CNN, NBC, HBO, A&E, and the National Football League. It specializes in so-called experiential marketing, which is based on people going to places or events." http://nyti.ms/11Tb6Xw
2. CULINARY THIEVERY: Eater asked some prominent chefs how and when they should credit the sources of their inspiration. "From Wylie Dufresne and Jose Andrés in the U.S. to Christian Puglisi and David Toutain in Europe, chefs have considered several aspects of the problem: what constitutes culinary plagiarism (if there is such a thing), protecting recipes, crediting sources, distilling your influences, and how to keep chefs accountable." http://bit.ly/Ty18Wi
Speaking of: Here's piece we ran in 2007 about idea theft in the event industry: "In a discipline as collaborative as event production, such tales of disputes over creative content are all too common. The event world is rife with stories of ideas, designs, and even entire proposals taken lock, stock, and barrel and re-created with no credit—or compensation—given to the creator." http://bizba.sh/11TbMw6
What do you think? Should chefs credit their sources? Do too many event professionals rip each other off? Tell us: [email protected].
3. GREEN APPLEBEES: The chain's new Harlem franchise will be New York City's first LEED Gold-certified restaurant. SustainableBusiness.com: "The restaurant harvests rainwater from its rooftop greenhouse and automatic shades and skylights bring in and control daylight. It has Energy Star appliances, waterless urinals, reclaimed wood and LED lighting. Bamboo figures prominently throughout the interior, used for the bar, countertops and chandeliers. One of the more striking features are living walls in the dining rooms." http://bit.ly/UBTbCF
4. CHINESE EVENTS MARKETING: Chinese cell phone manufacturers have cribbed from Apple's strategy, creating launch events that have a legacy in Steve Jobs's marketing philosophy. CNN Money: "You wouldn't know it from the event's production values, but in China Meizu is one of the also-rans behind Samsung and a growing list of Chinese-owned Android smartphone makers." 5. MENU TRENDS FOR 2013: After surveying some 1,800 chefs and 200 bartenders, the National Restaurant Association has prepared its "What's Hot" culinary forecast of menu trends for 2013. Predicted trends include regional signature cocktails, healthy kids' meals, and new cuts of meat including Denver steak. http://bit.ly/TAGF37
6. BOFFO BROADWAY: This year Broadway set record attendance and box office figures, with 12.3 million admissions and nearly $1.14 billion in ticket sales, according to the Broadway League. Executive director Charlotte St. Martin: "Word of mouth continues to be the greatest influence for show selection, with a notable uptick in the power of social networking posts.” Entertainment Weekly: http://bit.ly/Ysu1dT
