September 22, 2014: Climate Change March Draws 300,000 to Manhattan, Procter & Gamble Cancels N.F.L. Activation, Los Angeles Nixes Giant Waterslide Stunt

1. CLIMATE CHANGE MARCH DRAWS 300,000 TO MANHATTAN: In advance of a United Nations summit on climate change, around 300,000 protesters—including former Vice President Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio, and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio—marched through Manhattan. The New York Times: “Coursing through Midtown, from Columbus Circle to Times Square and the Far West Side, the People’s Climate March was a spectacle even for a city known for doing things big, and it was joined, in solidarity, by demonstrations on Sunday across the globe, from Paris to Papua New Guinea. … From the scientists holding an oversize chalkboard to the Hurricane Sandy victims toting life preservers, the march was a self-consciously inclusive affair, with the organizers intent on creating a very big tent, which they hoped would hammer home the relevance of climate change and its effects.” http://nyti.ms/1qkTygw

2. PROCTER & GAMBLE CANCELS N.F.L. ACTIVATION: Yet another N.F.L. sponsor has spoken out against the league’s handling of domestic violence allegations, as Procter & Gamble cancelled an activation tied to breast cancer awareness. Associated Press: “P&G's Crest brand had been working on a program with players from each of the NFL's 32 teams to wear pink mouthguards and participate in other activities. But on Friday the Cincinnati-based company said Crest would no longer be part of on-field activities and joined the chorus of sponsors voicing disapproval of the NFL's actions. It remains a sponsor but said it will ‘determine future actions as needed.’” http://abcn.ws/1u8XZCG

3. LOS ANGELES NIXES GIANT WATERSLIDE STUNT: An event that would have turned a Los Angeles street into a giant waterslide has been cancelled because of the drought gripping the region. Associated Press: “The padded slide would have used 15,000 to 20,000 gallons to send participants slipping several blocks between courthouses and past City Hall. A Public Works spokesman says the water department thought the event was a bad idea at a time when conservation is being promoted.” http://bit.ly/1mAIfG6
