* INCOMING *

1. COMPETING INTERESTS:
Google's launch of the new LG Nexus phone is scheduled for October 29, the same day Microsoft plans to host an event for its Windows Phone 8 device. The timing appears to be more than a coincidence as Google becomes more aggressive in its efforts to grab a bigger slice of the smartphone market; the tech giant plans to live stream the gathering on YouTube. 2. ENGAGEMENT LEAP:
When Felix Baumgartner jumped from the Earth's stratosphere on October 14, event sponsor Red Bull saw a big boost in social media engagement. According to analysis company Taykey, brand followers of Twitter and Facebook kept their updates in time with the dive. Mashable: "The Internet’s activity went hand in hand almost with Baumgartner’s jump, almost silencing when he jumped and then peaking when he landed safely on the ground. 'People were literally holding their breaths,' Taykey said." http://on.mash.to/WJ8s5d

3. FACEBOOK VS. TV:
At a data conference in Rome yesterday, Facebook was pitching brands the idea of social ads, and while brands seem to agree that ad placement on the social networking site are effective, a survey from research company Statsit showed television is still a more influential platform. Mikko Kotila, Statsit CEO: “Television’s influence was double compared to Facebook’s. The research assumption was that they’d be more influenced by Facebook. But we got completely opposite results.” Adweek: http://bit.ly/T3l5Xj

4. TRAVEL PRICES:
According to a survey by American Express Global Business Travel, the cost of 2013 business travel will only increase slightly. Business-class airfare is expected to jump 3 percent and hotel occupancy is expected to increase 2 to 7 percent. International Business Times: http://bit.ly/RIgOVM
