October 21, 2013: White House Resumes Public Tours, Hollywood Award Show Aims for Bigger Profile, Titanic Violin Sets Auction Record

1. WHITE HOUSE RESUMES PUBLIC TOURS: Public tours of the East Wing and executive residence of the White House will restart in November, officials announced. Politico: "Tours were put on hold in March as sequestration spending cuts took effect, when the Secret Service was forced to furlough workers to adapt to reduced spending levels. With a new fiscal year under way and the government reopened, the agency determined that it could again staff the tours." http://politi.co/GUkFQA

2. HOLLYWOOD AWARD SHOW AIMS FOR BIGGER PROFILE: The Hollywood Film Awards are tonight, but with the big winners already announced, the drama is whether the show can raise its profile enough to be broadcast on television. Hollywood Reporter: "Behind the scenes, executives from Dick Clark Productions also will focus on the event itself, assessing its viability as a broadcast entry that could join the ranks of other shows the company produces such as NBC's Golden Globe Awards and ABC's American Music Awards." http://bit.ly/16kCpuR

3. TITANIC VIOLIN SETS AUCTION RECORD: Setting a record for a Titanic artifact, a violin from the wreckage sold at auction for $1.6 million in London this weekend. Associated Press: "The sea-corroded instrument, now unplayable, is thought to have belonged to bandmaster Wallace Hartley, who was among the disaster's more than 1,500 victims. The story of Hartley's band, which stoically continued playing on the ship's deck until the disaster's final hour, is a memorable part of James Cameron's Titanic, when Hartley and his colleagues are seen playing 'Nearer, My God, To Thee' as the passengers around them scream and drown in the icy water." http://huff.to/1cKICFd
