November 26, 2013: Secrets to Oscar Campaigning at Events, How Millennials React to Live Events on TV, American Music Awards Ratings Up

1. SECRETS TO OSCAR CAMPAIGNING AT EVENTS: Oscar campaigning means showing up to the right events, staging your own, and getting the right people to attend. The Hollywood Reporter rounds up the best strategies that the contenders are using this year: “How do you get jaded voters to show up for yet another event? Promise them a show. So far, one of the season's biggest hits was a Mary Poppins sing-along that the movie's co-composer Richard Sherman led at the Beverly Hills Hotel to promote Saving Mr. Banks—even Sean Penn got into the spirit.” http://bit.ly/17Ml2XK

2. HOW MILLENNIALS REACT TO LIVE EVENTS ON TV: Pepsi, a major event sponsor, took a closer look at how viewers responded to the MTV Video Music Awards—yes, the one with Miley Cyrus twerking—and learned that millennials were more likely to jump immediately onto social media while older viewers waited longer. They also gravitated to different networks. Adweek: “During the VMAs, Facebook was the most popular social media brand, accounting for 41 percent of consumer usage, followed by Twitter with 32 percent. And while Cyrus’ antics burned up Twitter, performances by Justin Timberlake and Katy Perry had fans taking to Facebook to discuss.” http://bit.ly/17KnE8A

3. AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS RATINGS UP: Nearly 13 million viewers tuned in to the American Music Awards, its highest ratings in four years. The only show it couldn’t beat: NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Entertainment Weekly: “The numbers represent the show’s second-biggest audience in 11 years, plus was up 86 percent from 2012 among teen viewers. The AMAs easily dominated every other entertainment show on broadcast.” http://bit.ly/1gbWdXD
