1. LENO COMPARES SOCHI OLYMPICS TO NAZI GERMANY: Even the personalities on NBC, which will broadcast the Olympics in Sochi this winter, are voicing their ambivalence about the host country because of Russia’s anti-gay laws. 2. HBO PLANS NATIONWIDE GIRLS PREMIERE PARTIES: To promote the premiere of the third season of the show Girls, HBO will sponsor β€œGirls Night Out” events in eight cities across the country January 6. Rolling Stone: β€œEach event will include a live feed of the New York premiere's red carpet, as well as β€˜personalized messages’ from actress-creator Lena Dunham.” Befitting its indie ethos, planners will post information on how to register on its Tumblr account. http://rol.st/J4Q6IA

3. AVOIDING LEGAL ISSUES AT HOLIDAY PARTIES: Holiday parties can be a legal minefield, but one lawyer provides suggestions on how to host a headache-free event, such as purchasing short-term insurance to cover any mishaps. BOSTON:  The first Advanced Audio & Applications Exchange trade show will take place at the Hynes Convention Center September 23 to 24.

CHICAGO:  Chicago Theatre Week 2014 will take place February 11 to 16. In its second year, the event has a new partnership with local hotels, which will offer room packages and tickets to theater productions.

LAS VEGAS:  Las Vegas Sun: β€œIn the end, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association opted for more money and a bigger arena for its National Finals Rodeo. Left to watch the cowboys hit the trail is Las Vegas, home to the sport’s prize event for 29 years. LOS ANGELES:  The W Los Angeles–Westwood has unveiled plans for renovated meeting spaces slated for completion in January. The renovations will include updates to the three distinct Studio spaces along with the makeover of Studio Four, transformed into β€œStrategy,” a modern take on a traditional boardroom with adaptable conference equipment.

The Recording Academy has announced its official sponsors for the 56th annual Grammy awards: Degree Women, Delta Air Lines, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Hyundai, JBL, MasterCard, Microsoft Surface, People, Pepsi, Procter & Gamble (Covergirl, Gain, Herbal Essences, and Olay), and WestwoodOne. The awards take place at the Staples Center on January 26.

NEW YORK:  New York magazine: "Permits are in place to turn the former Salvation Army Chinatown Shelter at 223-225 Bowery into a 188-room hotel with restaurant and bar on the ground floor.
