January 30, 2014: See These Super Bowl Ads Now, Inside a Very Posh Benefit, Academy Disqualifies Oscar Nominee

1. SEE THESE SUPER BOWL ADS NOW: A number of Super Bowl advertisers already have their commercials online. See the spots for Volkswagen, GoDaddy, Butterfinger, and several others at Adweek: goo.gl/1NNX6v

2. INSIDE A VERY POSH BENEFIT: What does a $5,000-a-plate benefit in New York entail? At an event last week in New York for the Drawing Center, it meant a dinner served by Thomas Keller of Per Se and the French Laundry; Mario Batali and Daniel Boulud; Dan Barber of Blue Hill at Stone Barns; and the pâtissier Dominique Ansel. Not to mention decor innovations such as “a dining table descended from the ceiling on pulleys.” New York Times: goo.gl/vQHjth

3. ACADEMY DISQUALIFIES OSCAR NOMINEE: The song “Alone Yet Not Alone,” from a film of the same name, will not appear on Oscar ballots after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences disqualified it for improper campaigning. The inclusion of the little-known song raised eyebrows for beating out songs by Taylor Swift and Jay Z, but it turns out it had benefited from a grassroots campaign from its writer, Bruce Broughton, who is a former Academy governor and current music branch executive committee member. Hollywood Reporter: “No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage," said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the Academy president. goo.gl/pQYihx
