September 3, 2014: Ultra Music Fest Bans Minors, Snapchat Expands Services for Live Events, Fashion Week’s Love/Hate Relationship With Lincoln Center

1. ULTRA MUSIC FEST BANS MINORS: Miami’s Ultra Music Festival, a massively popular electronic music show, will ban minors starting next year. The festival has been the target of complaints following drug use and other safety and security incidents. Miami Herald: “[Raymond] Martinez, the head of security, said the festival’s leaders have been thinking about improving safety and the overall festival experience for months. He said organizers took a look at the overall percentage of ticket sales to minors and polled some who went to the event before banning minors. With minors, ‘you get into a whole different realm. You’re talking about juveniles and these are large crowds. It’s very similar to a nightclub type of thing,’ he said. ‘The consensus was that it would be a better event if you eliminated all-ages.’” http://hrld.us/1po7Pse

2. SNAPCHAT EXPANDS SERVICES FOR LIVE EVENTS: The social video app Snapchat has debuted a new “Live” feature that will let people connect at events. TechCrunch: “It’s not hard to imagine music festivals, sporting events, concert tours, colleges, or other ‘location-based communities’ paying for access to a marketing channel like Snapchat’s main feed page.” http://tcrn.ch/1tNgPNV

3. FASHION WEEK’S LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH LINCOLN CENTER: As fashion designers abandon the official home of New York Fashion Week—78 are showing at Lincoln Center, compared to 89 in 2010—producer IMG is trying to change the experience to bring them back. The New York Times: “Designers now have more liberty to tweak seating and catwalk setups. The check-in process was also rerouted (to mixed reviews) and a V.I.P. concierge program was quietly rolled out that is expanding further this season. Yet, those points are not why designers continue to show at Lincoln Center. As much as it’s faulted for being a slick machine, that’s exactly what some designers want. Based in Los Angeles, [designer Monique] Lhuillier doesn’t want to spend her time in New York worrying about multiple vendors at an off-site venue. IMG is trustworthy and professional, she said.” http://nyti.ms/1pHJuUf
