October 23, 2015: Why Big Las Vegas Conventions May Leave the City, Prince Harry Plans U.S. Visit to Promote New Sports Event, Get a Better Return on Your Event

1. WHY BIG LAS VEGAS CONVENTIONS MAY LEAVE THE CITY: Representatives from International C.E.S., UBM-Advanstar, the National Association of Broadcasters, and others told the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee that the convention center needs to update its facilities, technology, and capacity to keep shows from moving to other cities. Las Vegas Review-Journal: “The trade-show representatives were brutally candid about their assessment of Las Vegas' position. … In addition to the need to expand existing large shows, panelists said expanding facilities would enable the city to attract new shows that can't get on the Las Vegas calendar because existing venues are full.” http://bit.ly/1LKmiuS

2. PRINCE HARRY PLANS U.S. VISIT TO PROMOTE NEW SPORTS EVENT: In advance of next year’s Invictus Games in Orlando, Prince Harry will visit First Lady Michelle Obama in Virginia next week. The games, planned for May, are a sports competition for injured armed service personnel. Associated Press: “The prince's visit on Oct. 28 aims to highlight the mental health and wellbeing of service personnel. Officials say he plans to visit Fort Belvoir military base with Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, who is U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's wife, to meet wounded servicemen and women. Harry will also attend a reception at the British ambassador's house in Washington.” http://apne.ws/1MH7tcA

3. GET A BETTER RETURN ON YOUR EVENT: Rethinking events with a better marketing strategy on everything from managing your guest list to offering engaging content in reminder emails can pay off with a better return on the investment in an event. Advertising Age: Says Ben Hindman, co-founder and C.E.O. of event marketing platform Splash: “Take the reminder email, for example. Most marketers see it as a one-trick pony: Get more people to RSVP. That's missing the whole point. Smart organizations frame their reminder emails as mini-campaigns. They'll offer up engaging content -- like an exclusive piece of video content that only invitees can see. … But the best part about throwing one is that you really don't need someone to attend. If someone clicks on two emails in your event marketing sequence, for example, that's as valuable a lead as someone who actually showed up.” http://bit.ly/1PGfT96
