1. C.E.S. PLANS CHANGES FOR BIGGEST SHOW YET: Looking to provide value—not just some flashy gadgets—for attendees, International C.E.S. will provide more curation and organization to the 3,500 products on display at the show, which begins Wednesday in Las Vegas. Los Angeles Times: “This year's CES is slated to be the biggest ever, taking up more than 2.4 million square feet of exhibit space, about a 7% increase from a year earlier, when it officially kicks off Wednesday after two days of media previews. Despite its gargantuan footprint, show organizers say the convention will be more manageable and relevant. There will be less emphasis on the typical CES electronics like televisions, tablets and smartphones, and more attention paid to industry-changing innovations such as connected, electric and driverless cars; the Internet of Things; drones; virtual reality and gaming; and entertainment tech.” http://lat.ms/1Rlmd6E
2. VIEWERS TUNE OUT COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF: Moving the College Football Playoff semifinal games to New Year’s Eve was a losing play for ESPN as ratings for the games took a dive. The New York Times: “ESPN had hoped to turn New Year’s Eve into a new sports holiday to showcase the semifinal games, much as Thanksgiving has become for the N.F.L. and Christmas Day for the N.B.A. The network aggressively marketed the advent of the semifinals in a promotional campaign, but the effort apparently did not succeed.” http://nyti.ms/1RZp6vz
3. SECURITY FEARS MOVE CITIES TO CANCEL NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATIONS: Authorities cancelled fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve in Paris, Brussels, and Rochester, New York, because of fears of terrorism, while celebrations in New York City’s Times Square and on the Las Vegas Strip saw increased security to keep revelers safe. NBC News: “High-profile attacks claimed by ISIS and other groups in 2015, and a general unease about safety and security, cast a shadow over traditional public gatherings in cities across the globe.” http://nbcnews.to/1kvyUP6
