Marathon Gets High Security

Just as most indoor events are adding tighter security precautions, Sunday's New York marathon--which runs through all five boroughs--is getting more security than in years past. According to The New York Post, runners will go through rigorous searches at the starting line and as many as 3,000 N.Y.P.D. and other law-enforcement officers will be on the ground (2,200 security personnel are normally stationed along the course). Meanwhile, police choppers with snipers will accompany the media helicopters filming the race, and pleasure boats will be restricted from the waters around the Verrazano Bridge, where the race starts, and the skies above the course will be heavily restricted. The 30,000 competitors are being warned to avoid taking refreshments from strangers along the 26-mile course, which runs through all five boroughs. They will not be allowed to take bags to the starting line except one specially issued clear plastic bag.
