On March 13, the James Beard Foundation hosted a reception to announce the nominees of the 2002 James Beard awards. Among the nomination announcements that had the crowd buzzing: New York chefs swept the All-Clad Cookware Outstanding Chef Award nominations, with Mario Batali of Babbo, Tom Colicchio of Gramercy Tavern, Nobu Matsuhisa of Nobu, Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin and Alfred Portale of Gotham Bar & Grill facing off for the prize.
The other big moment of the evening will be the announcement of the American Express Best Chef New York City award, with nominees Rocco DiSpirito for Union Pacific, Odette Fada for San Domenico, Alex Lee for Daniel, David Pasternack for Esca and
Marcus Samuelsson for Aquavit.
For the Illy Best New Restaurant award, three New York restaurants—Atelier at the Ritz-Carlton New York—Central Park, Fiamma Osteria and L'Impero—will compete with 40 Sardines in Overland Park, Kan. and Zaytinya in Washington, D.C.
Karen DeMasco of Craft, Gina DePalma of Babbo and Johnny Iuzzini of Jean Georges were nominated for the All-Clad Bakeware Outstanding Pastry Chef Award, competing with Ann Amernick of Palena in Washington, DC and Karen Barker of Magnolia Grill in Durham, N.C.
New York restaurants also swept the Outstanding Restaurant Design nominations. Nominees are Blue Fin designer Yabu Pushelberg, L'Impero designer Vicente Wolf Associates and Lozoo designer Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis. For the Outstanding Restaurant Graphics, Eric Baker Design Associates was nominated for its graphics for Blue Smoke, and Sacramento-based Bob's Haus' design for Craft will compete with 40 Sardines' design by Three Wide Marketing.
The winners of the journalism awards will be announced on May 2 at the Grand Hyatt New York, and the main awards gala—celebrating Beard's 100th birthday and hosted by actress Swoozie Kurtz—will be held at the Marriott Marquis on May 4.
