This Week: Puerto Rican Pride, Jazz, the Stakes

Today, the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation holds a gala at the new Icahn Stadium catered by RCano Events. The American Folk Art Museum’s benefit takes inspiration from its “Self and Subject” portraiture exhibition. At the Javits Center the Fashion Footwear Association of New York opens its New York Shoe Expo, which closes Friday.

Tomorrow, the Public Relations Society of America’s Silver Anvil awards (one of our Top 100 Events) get passed out at the Equitable Tower. Motorola shows off product designs at Studio 450. Also Thursday, the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival kicks off with screenings at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center. The festival continues through June 23.

The Triple Crown series of horse racing comes to a close with the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday. Also that day, at South Street Seaport, Target’s Children’s Day family festival will be capped with a performance by They Might Be Giants and fireworks. This weekend, the Madison Square Park Conservancy and the Union Square Hospitality Group host the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in Madison Square, with event production by Karlitz & Company. Sunday, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade brings out a festive crowd on Fifth Avenue.

Monday, the League of American Theatres and Producers and NYC & Company’s Broadway Under the Stars performances come to Bryant Park. The United States Golf Association’s U. S. Open Championship commences with its first day of practice rounds at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. The New York chapter of Meeting Professionals International holds its awards and installation event at the Supper Club. New York City Ballet holds its Dance With the Dancers benefit at the New York State Theater. The JVC Jazz Festival New York begins Monday, and runs through June 25 at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Jazz Standard.

Tuesday, the Association of Independent Commercial Producers’ Show honors creative commercials at the Museum of Modern Art. Tishman Speyer Properties, Target, and Bank of America hold Drive-In Movies at the Rock—a series of outdoor screenings in Rockefeller Center’s Channel Gardens—which continue through next Friday.
