We’re big fans of The Daily, the gossipy magazine and Web site chronicling the obsessions of the fashion set. (After all, we have some of the same fixations—parties, designers, etc. We even asked editor Brandusa Niro for tips for creating buzz around an industry event.) But we’re starting to wonder about its beef with Milk Studios, the large West Side venue that has hosted Calvin Klein’s fashion shows for the past eight years.
It all started last fall, when big-time editors Anna Wintour and Patrick McCarthy stormed out before a Calvin Klein show when the space became overheated, prompting Women’s Wear Daily to call it the “worst venue” in New York. The Daily recapped the contretemps a few days later, noting that the Derek Lam show also had heating problems, and gave Milk managing owner Mazdack Rassi a chance to explain the snafu—a reasonable response to a situation that had the fashion industry buzzing.
Then after the Lam and Klein labels chose new venues for their shows for the current Fashion Week, The Daily ran a January story under the headline “Got Milk? EXCLUSIVE! Calvin Klein & Derek Lam finally say NO.” And this weekend it asked a group of top editors for their reaction to Calvin Klein’s moving its show from Milk to the label’s corporate headquarters.
Here’s the thing: We’re as obsessed as anyone over the behind-the-scenes goings-on at events. But The Daily is owned by 7th on Sixth, the division of IMG that also runs the Fashion Week tents at Bryant Park, which are, of course, the most popular venues for fashion shows—meaning The Daily keeps ragging on a business that competes with its owner, without pointing out the connection.
