Following the string of recent layoffs at Time Inc., an off-site meeting for the editorial staff of Real Simple at the Montage spa and resort in Laguna Beach, California got some attention in Women's Wear Daily. While such trips were standard at the publisher before Time Warner's merger with AOL and the industry's ad slump, lately only sales staffs have been hopping on planes to exotic locales, and even those trips have been rare. (The People sales team went to Miami and In Style's salespeople met in Northern California, but most sales and editorial meetings have been conducted in and around New York.) A spokesperson's defense of the trip: "Offsites offer a unique opportunity to share ideas and foster innovation. And yes, the weather was great."
