The passing of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, and former President Gerald Ford—two very different men, to say the least—has spawned numerous memorial events in cities across the country, and the tributes reflect each man’s particular style.
Brown’s body arrived at the Apollo Theater in a horse-drawn carriage on Thursday; the on-stage public viewing of the musician in a golden coffin went on throughout the day.
Unlike Brown (and former President Ronald Reagan, whose body was also transported by horse and carriage), Ford’s body will be moved to the Capitol with decidedly less flair (via limousine).
As reported by The New York Times, even with plans for Thursday’s showing of Brown’s body, the Apollo never even considered canceling its traditional Wednesday Amateur Night competition. “Putting on events is what we do, after all,” offered Florence Wiley, the theater’s director of marketing and communications.
In Washington, events are proceeding but will be slightly delayed. D.C. officials pushed the time of mayor-elect Adrian M. Fenty’s inauguration back from 10 AM to 2 PM. The inaugural ball will go on as planned Tuesday evening.
