May 9, 2013: Prince Harry's U.S. Agenda, Inside a Hedge Fund Conference, Why Brands Love Flash Mobs

1. PLANS FOR PRINCE HARRY'S U.S. VISIT: The British prince begins a weeklong U.S. visit today in Washington. The agenda includes a visit to an anti-landmine photography exhibition from Halo Trust, dinner with the British ambassador, and a tour of a New Jersey community devastated by Hurricane Sandy. He will also attend the Wounded Warrior Games in Colorado and a polo match in Connecticut. New York Daily News: "It’s his first stateside travel since last August, when Harry was pictured cavorting naked in a Vegas hotel suite, surrounded by scantily clad women. … Now he’s ready to pick up his princely duties again—but on a trip with a decidedly military theme." http://nydn.us/15Jx8kU

2. INSIDE A HEDGE FUND CONFERENCE: Around 1,800 Wall Street hedge funders have come to Las Vegas for Anthony Scaramucci's SkyBridge Alternatives Conference. New York TImes: "The SALT conference, too, grew out of the financial crisis. After President Obama warned Wall Street banks in early 2009 against throwing junkets on the taxpayers’ dime, several banks canceled their Las Vegas conferences. Mr. Scaramucci decided to fill the void, holding the first SALT conference at the Wynn, with 400 people in attendance. SALT has become the main engine of the SkyBridge marketing machine, though Mr. Scaramucci is quick to point out that it is not a SkyBridge event but an industrywide conclave. The conference is profitable, he says, but not as profitable as it would be if its organizers did not pour so much money back into it, paying top dollar for prominent speakers among other expenses." http://nyti.ms/10cbBNg

3. WHY BRANDS LOVE FLASH MOBS: Flash mobs, the gatherings of people often performing a surprise dance, have gone commercial, with brands such as Nike, Oscar Mayer, and Ford Motor Company paying as much as $10,000 to professional groups to entertain at trade shows, meetings, and product launches. Wall Street Journal: "The positive feelings people get when watching flash mobs are often 'transferred to the brand responsible for creating the experience,' says Brad Haley, chief marketing officer of CKE Restaurants Inc., parent company of Carl’s Jr. It staged a 2011 flash mob that included a funky-chicken dance at a minor-league baseball game in Visalia, California, to tout a new line of chicken sandwiches." http://on.wsj.com/11UY1vT
